Who Was Involved?
Spanish settlers led by Lucas Vázquez de Ayllón
About 100 enslaved Africans
What Happened?
In 1526, Spanish colonists established a settlement called San Miguel de Gualdape in present-day South Carolina or Georgia.
It was the first European colony in what is now the U.S. but failed due to disease, starvation, and conflict.
The enslaved Africans revolted, escaped, and became the first known group of self-liberated Black people in North America.
Where Did It Happen?
Somewhere along the South Carolina or Georgia coast (the exact location is unknown).
When Did It Happen?
1526 (lasted only a few months).
Why Is It Important?
First recorded slave rebellion in what is now the U.S.
Shows that resistance to slavery started as soon as slavery began in North America.
Many of the escaped Africans likely lived with Indigenous tribes, forming early African-Native alliances.
