Who Was Involved?

  • Spanish settlers led by Lucas Vázquez de Ayllón

  • About 100 enslaved Africans

What Happened?

  • In 1526, Spanish colonists established a settlement called San Miguel de Gualdape in present-day South Carolina or Georgia.

  • It was the first European colony in what is now the U.S. but failed due to disease, starvation, and conflict.

  • The enslaved Africans revolted, escaped, and became the first known group of self-liberated Black people in North America.

Where Did It Happen?

  • Somewhere along the South Carolina or Georgia coast (the exact location is unknown).

When Did It Happen?

  • 1526 (lasted only a few months).

Why Is It Important?

  • First recorded slave rebellion in what is now the U.S.

  • Shows that resistance to slavery started as soon as slavery began in North America.

  • Many of the escaped Africans likely lived with Indigenous tribes, forming early African-Native alliances.
